The Road to Oz

oz4.jpgIn it we meet the shaggyman, on his quest to go to oz. We also meet up with Dorothy again, and her little dog too. Although it may not be the most imaginitive in the series (that would be Rinkitink of Oz, or Tiktok of Oz in my opinion), it is still a very pleasant addition to any bookshelf.

Book Description
Join Dorothy and Toto on another thrilling adventure and meet a host of new friends, including the Shaggy Man, little Button-Bright, and the Rainbow’s beautiful daughter, Polychrome. A delight for children of all ages, this handsome reproduction of the original 1909 edition features 126 illustrations by John R. Neill.

Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz

oz3.jpgThis is one of my favorite Oz books. We see Dorothy and the Wizard reunite, of course, but there are some interesting things going on. The Wizard has become a grand character; Baum has thrown his own nature into him and has made him real to us. The Wizard is now a resourceful, sometimes devious, sardonic, yet compassionate man. The story delves into the bizarre with the Glass City and its vegetable people (and their gruesome demise). The Gargoyles are quite disturbing in their emotionally hollow, wooden world. The Braided Man of Pyramid Mountain provides dry humor (here we see Baum’s love of puns). Essentially this is one of the more original works of Baum, with quixotic new characters, and further development of those we already knew. I think perhaps Ozma comes into her own in this novel; she is what a queen should be, loyal to her subjects, but not above the law; she is regal, kind yet firm, passionate and loving. Baum has created a fearsome yet beautiful per! sonage in Ozma. Read More »

Ozma of Oz

oz2.jpgI just love this books. So much imagination! I read this book back in first grade. I read a lot that year, and no book stuck in my mind like this one did. I have remembered the story for years, because it is so original. I recently checked it out in the library to re-read it, and it was every bit as good. I recommend this book to all ages, L. Frank is da Baum! :)

Synopsis
When a storm blows Dorothy to the land of Ev where lunches grow on trees, she meets the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, and Princess Ozma, and together they set out to free the Queen of Ev and her ten children.

The Marvelous Land of Oz

oz1.jpgThe first book had its humorous moments, but it was clearly a children’s fantasy book as well, and a masterful one. That book ranks side by side with its film version and is one of the greatest books ever written.

This book was very well written and has a great surprise ending, but I found it to have too much satire. Take the scene where the Scarecrow and Jack are so interested in formalities they get an interpreter without realizing they speak the same language. Is it just me, or have the Scarecrow and Tin Woodsman become more clueless in this book after getting what they wanted? Also, the Woggle Bug character poked a lot of fun at snobbish people which I found funny, but I fear a seven year old might not understand the humor.

Into a Dark Realm (The Darkwar Saga, Book 2)

Into a Dark Realm.jpgI am a fan of Raymond Feist for many years now, and I always look forward to his books. Its a very interesting book in the trilogy. Its full of mysteries. I am waiting for the next book in the series. Still, I found it to be an interesting book, and I absolutely loved the short return to the Hall of Worlds. Overall its a great book. This is another great Raymond Feist book, one that I highly recommend.

Synopsis

The Conclave of Shadows has smashed the Nighthawks’ dread plot to destroy the Empire of Great Kesh through civil war, putting an end to the murderous brotherhood’s reign of terror. But there is no time for the victors to celebrate, for the mad sorcerer, Leso Varen, has taken refuge with the Magicians of the Assembly on the world of Kelewan, and is lost among the most powerful men and women of that empire. And a devastating new threat looms on the horizon: hordes of the Dasati—the most vicious warriors in the known universe—are massing to overrun both Kelewan and Midkemia.
