Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, is truly a genius. Arthur Dent is taken from a modern Earth, seconds before it is destroyed, by Ford Prefect, stranded, not-from-Earth researcher for The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. After series of painful, shocking events, Arthur is rescued by Trillian (a brilliant former earthling), Zaphod Beeblebrox (the absurd former president of the galaxy), and Marvin (a depressed robot). Zaphod has stolen The Heart of Gold, and is now being chased by the police. Cakes and Ale

Cakes are what aled me, as now ale is what cakes my memory like mud, dry and pale in the looking-glass that’s half-full and looking back to see if anyone’s looking back to look me full in the face. Whilst this is occurring, the book’s pages turn back to their humble beginnings. They’re shy (that is to say, discreet, that is to say, English) and poor (that is to say, not well-to-do, that is to say, not American) and make ends meet up with each other inevitably, by design, as the author’s hand is the mirror-image of mine. We write together–matching sentence for sentence, word for word, letter for letter–pausing every now and then to look back over our shoulders to see if anyone’s looking at us–a reader, perhaps, or maybe even two, who look just like each other and just like us, or I presume they do. I can’t tell for certain as their heads are turned away from us, turned over their shoulders, looking back, at you[underlined}. Views are full of such views. [click to continue...]

A very interesting sequel to the first in the series, Grave Sight. Harper Connelly and her stepbrother Tolliver Lang find themselves again embroiled in an intriguing mystery. As circumstances begin to point to them as guilty of the crime, they are forced to investigate to prove their own innocence. When an indiscretion in Tolliver’s past seems to add to their difficulties, Harper comes to a startling realization. A wonderfully written and emotionally satisfying addition to the series.

You Slay Me (Aisling Grey, Guardian, Book 1)

This book is written with such wit and spunk that it is a quick read. I enjoy strong female roles, and Aisling fits the part down pat! She was independent of her mate, Drake, which I thought was refreshing. In many other books the heroine is stuck to the hero’s side, but in this series, Aisling’s character is built separately, not in the shadow of the hero. There were parts that I couldn’t help but laugh out loud, no matter where I was. I enjoyed the well developed plot where there were multiple ‘unknown’ characters that added mystery to the mix.
